Chinchillas

   Chinchillas are nocturnal, delicate and agile rodents from mountainous regions of South America.  They are very soft and fluffy and some enjoy being petted, but many chinchillas are shy and prefer not to be handled much.  They have strict diets, mostly consisting of grass hay, and inappropriate snacks can make them ill.  They are masters of parkour and love to hop around multi-levelled metal cages, take dust baths, and try and get into trouble!  Chinchillas are long-lived, often making into their teens and sometimes twenties!

Giovanni was owner relinquished to our local animal control due to the owners having a baby.  He is a typical chinchilla in the sense that he will hop into our lap and say hi, but doesn't really want to be petted much. Gio would sell his soul for a timothy cookie!

Pika and Raichu were owner relinquished due to the owners schedule.  They are a well-bonded pair and we have never seen them bicker, they will sometimes even share a dust bath!  Pikachu is a crazy chunky dude who always gets the zoomies in the evening. Raichu is the sweetheart and is more willing to be held than many chinchis

Blaine is a special needs chinchilla due to dental disease, so he is currently a medical resident at LWAS, but if someone with the appropriate experience was interested in a special needs adoption, let's chat!
He needs regular dental procedures from the vet, some of them sedated. he also has problems grooming himself and eating hay. But he is the sweetest dude who loves pets!

1. Fill out an Adoption Application
                                                               Even if you're not sure yet which animal is best for you, this                                                               opens up the conversation and allows us to help you prepare for your new pet.

2. Decide which animal you want to adopt
                                                     You might meet them at an event or make an appointment to                                                             come to the Sanctuary to meet your potential new forever friend.

3. Set up the enclosure, and send us a picture!
                                                     It is important to have everything ready when you bring the new pet home so they everyone is comfortable and happy.

4. Pay the adoption fee, sign the adoption contract
                                                     This is the official exchange of "ownership" of the pet from us to                                                           you. Adoption fees help offset the cost of the pre-adoption health care that each animal receives.

5. Take home your new best friend!
                                                                  Now that the paperwork is done, you can enjoy your new pet and                                                                    feel good about supporting a nonprofit animal rescue instead of a                                                                    pet store.  Now that you have adopted a pet, it makes room for                                   another animal who needs help. Thank you!
