A rabbit, rat or box turtle may not seem very "exotic" as a pet, but anything other than a dog or cat is considered an exotic pet in veterinary circles, because these animals require specialty care and medicine.  It is important that exotic animals are seen by veterinarians who are experienced in the medical care of that species.
