Rats
Rats are an increasingly popular pet, typically kept in same-sex groups called "mischiefs". a pet rat can be just like a tiny dog, cuddling with their owners and learning tricks.
Although a well-handled rat can be very friendly, many rats from hoarding/unsafe situations can be very shy and require lots of patience and trust building.
Rats have complex social structures so often a bit of work is required by the owner to integrate new individuals into the mischief. The payoff is when they relax in one big "cuddle puddle"!
Biggie was relinquished due to the owner being unable to get friends for him. He is a bit of a finger-nipper with humans but has been gentle to the rats he has met- unfortunately those rats were not gentle to Biggie, so he is still looking for the perfect bestie! Biggie loves corn on the cob.
Miss Nelson and Sister Ann came from a large group of rats rescued from an abandonment case. They are friendly in a way, they are happy to crawl all over us looking for snacks- but they also think our fingers are snacks. the world is their snack!
Karen and Cady were relinquished due to allergies. They are both a bit shy but Karen will come up to us and give kisses and sit in our lap. Cady would rather take her cheerios and be excused from the table.
Gabby and Trixie were part of a hoarding case and have never gotten to the point where they want to interact with people. We call them our "ghost rats" because the only come out of their hide when we leave.
Gerald, Mr. Hat, Randy, Stuart, Ned, Chef, and Mr. Garrison were from a large group of rats rescued from an abandonment case. They have never really warmed up to being touched and handled by people and are a bunch of cranky old men at this point. But they turn into some enthusiastic young pups when you bring out the snacks!
Ed, Edd "Double D", and Eddy were owner relinquished due to housing changes. They are some lazy, elderly dudes. They handle pretty well compared to most of our rats, but Ed (blond) has a history of being a bit nippy.
Aaron, Shane and Damian were owner relinquished due to allergies. They are a bit shy but they are gentle and sweet guys who get friendlier every day. Damian, the oldest, has some neurological symptoms that the vet suspects is a permanent issue. He is still able to get around, climb to the space pod, and live his best life, he is just a wobbly fellow sometimes. He shows a lot of enthusiasm for life and human interaction.

2. Decide which animal you want to adopt
You might meet them at an event or make an appointment to come to the Sanctuary to meet your potential new forever friend.
3. Set up the enclosure, and send us a picture!
It is important to have everything ready when you bring the new pet home so they everyone is comfortable and happy.
4. Pay the adoption fee, sign the adoption contract
This is the official exchange of "ownership" of the pet from us to you. Adoption fees help offset the cost of the pre-adoption health care that each animal receives.
5. Take home your new best friend!
Now that the paperwork is done, you can enjoy your new pet and feel good about supporting a nonprofit animal rescue instead of a pet store. Now that you have adopted a pet, it makes room for another animal who needs help. Thank you!
