Misc Mammals

Here you will find mammals we get less often here at Lost Woods- ferrets, hedgehogs, degus, and anyone else who doesn't quite fit into our more frequent categories.

Each of these species has very different care and handling so don't hesitate to reach out with questions about a particular species.

Degus are relatives of the chinchilla and have similar care- grass hay, dust baths, and climbing opportunities

Ferrets are carnivores and eat high-protein kibbles and meat.  They tend to be very playful and handleable, but they do have a musky odor that is part of the oils on their skin- it cannot be removed. they are just stinky! They need lots of playtime and enrichment.

Hedgehogs can sometimes be a little "prickly" and require lots of cleaning as they poop all over their running wheels and their feet- but once you gain their trust, they are the cutest little pincushions!

Norbert and Daggett the degus are very active and busy guys- they run on their wheel all day long, make lots of nests, and chew a lot! If they get too bored, they will overgroom each other and give each other crazy haircuts.  They are very friendly and love to crawl onto our hands and in our laps, but in typical degu fashion they will do parkour if you try to hold them still.

1. Fill out an Adoption Application
Even if you're not sure yet which animal is best for you, this                                                               opens up the conversation and allows us to help you prepare for your new pet.

Our Adoption Process

2. Decide which animal you want to adopt
You might meet them at an event or make an appointment to                                                             come to the Sanctuary to meet your potential new forever friend.

3. Set up the enclosure, and send us a picture!
It is important to have everything ready when you bring the new pet home so they everyone is comfortable and happy.

4. Pay the adoption fee, sign the adoption contract
This is the official exchange of "ownership" of the pet from us to                                                           you. Adoption fees help offset the cost of the pre-adoption health care that each animal receives.

5. Take home your new best friend!
Now that the paperwork is done, you can enjoy your new pet and                                                                    feel good about supporting a nonprofit animal rescue instead of a                                                                    pet store.  Now that you have adopted a pet, it makes room for                                   another animal who needs help. Thank you!
